N°3

Large-Scale High-Efficiency Horn Loudspeaker System

Designed for large rooms, the highest level stability, and maximum control — uncompromising in design, geometry, and dynamics.

The N°3 is the most powerful model of the N-Series.
A large-volume two-way horn loudspeaker system with maximum mechanical stability, a large-format mid/high-frequency horn, and a correspondingly dimensioned low-frequency system — engineered for long listening distances, realistic concert-level sound pressure, and stable directivity under all operating conditions.

Limited to three pairs per year —
because development, manufacturing, and final tuning require time.

Concept

LMH N°1 – Seitenansicht, monolithische Gehäusestruktur

The N°3 is designed for applications requiring large rooms, long listening distances, and sustained high sound pressure levels.
At its core is a very large-format mid/high-frequency horn, enabling stable directivity down to lower frequencies and significantly reducing driver load at high SPLs.

Due to the horn size, the system operates with lower acoustic compression, reduced distortion, and high dynamic headroom.
Even at elevated levels, radiation remains controlled and reproducible, without unstable room coupling or discontinuities in the crossover region.

The low-frequency section is conceived as an equal system partner.
Enclosure volume, symmetry, and tuning are deliberately matched to the radiation behavior of the horn to ensure homogeneous energy distribution, even at long listening distances.

A central element of the concept is the resonance-optimized, mechanically decoupled suspension.
Horn, bass enclosure, and supporting structure are structurally decoupled, minimizing structure-borne vibration and mechanical feedback.
Defined force paths provide a mechanically calm operating environment for the drivers — even under high load.

The N°3 follows a functional system logic: size, material selection, geometry, and mechanical decoupling are not stylistic choices, but necessary prerequisites for level stability, control, and clean imaging under real-world operating conditions.

Manufacturing & Materials

The mid/high-frequency horn is CNC-machined from solid wood.
Wood is deliberately chosen due to its high internal damping, which effectively reduces structural resonances — a critical factor for large-format horns operating at high sound pressure levels.

The low-frequency section is implemented in a symmetrically constructed enclosure.
The symmetrical structure ensures uniform pressure distribution, minimizes enclosure resonances, and supports precise, controlled low-frequency reproduction.

Horn, bass enclosure, and supporting structure are mechanically decoupled.
Solid stainless steel profiles provide the structural load paths and reduce structure-borne vibration transfer between the assemblies.

Finishes, wood species, and constructive details are defined on a project-specific basis.

Technical Concept & Design Rationale

This section is intended for readers who wish to understand the acoustic concept of the N°1 in greater detail.

1. System Overview

The N°3 is the most powerful model of the N-Series: a large-scale two-way horn loudspeaker system designed for large rooms, long listening distances, high level stability, and maximum control under real-world operating conditions.

  • System: two-way design with large-format mid/high-frequency horn (~700 mm) and 15″ Concentric bass concept

  • Crossover: approx. 300–400 Hz (model-dependent)

  • Efficiency: >96 dB / 1 W / 1 m

  • Operation: active (bi-amped)

  • Designed for large living spaces, studios, and dedicated listening rooms with high level demands

2. High-Frequency System & Horn Geometry

The N°3 is built on a project-specific basis and is available in two technically distinct editions.
Both variants share the same large-format horn and low-frequency concept, but differ in their mid/high-frequency operating principle.

At the core is a very large-format mid/high-frequency horn (~700 mm):
Its size significantly relieves the driver at high sound pressure levels, reduces acoustic compression, and increases dynamic headroom — while maintaining controlled, reproducible directivity, even at high levels and long listening distances.

N°3 · 2″ DK Edition

  • 70 cm sTrak wooden horn with 2″ compression driver

  • very high efficiency

  • maximum level stability and controlled directivity

  • classic horn design for long listening distances

N°3 · 6″ BB Edition

  • 70 cm sTrak wooden horn with 6″ cone full-range driver

  • broader midrange coupling

  • alternative tonal balance with the same level of system control

  • tuned on a project-specific basis

3. Low-Frequency System

The 15″ low-frequency driver operates in an LMH Concentric-B bass reflex system with a symmetrical enclosure layout and central port geometry.
The symmetrical structure ensures uniform pressure distribution, reduces enclosure resonances, and enables precise, controlled low-frequency reproduction, even at high sound pressure levels.

The low-frequency system is specifically matched to the radiation behavior of the large-format horn, ensuring coherent energy distribution across the crossover region.

A resonance-optimized, mechanically decoupled suspension separates the horn, low-frequency enclosure, and supporting structure in order to minimize structure-borne noise and mechanical feedback — a key prerequisite for mechanical stability and level consistency under high load.

4. Crossover Region & Directivity

The crossover frequency is set at approximately 300 Hz, placing it almost entirely outside the critical range of human vocal reproduction.
Thanks to the large horn size and the symmetrical low-frequency radiation, directivity in the crossover region remains stable and controlled, even at long listening distances and high sound pressure levels.

5. Active Operation

For the N°3, active (bi-amped) operation is recommended.
In the active configuration, a DSP-based crossover allows precise adjustment of crossover behavior, level, and time alignment to suit the room, listening distance, and desired target response.

6. Manufacturing, Tolerances & Measurements

All acoustically relevant components are manufactured or inspected in the LMH workshop.
CNC-machined horns, mechanically stable enclosure geometries, and defined wall thicknesses minimize self-resonances and ensure reproducible results.

Measurements are carried out on a project-specific basis and serve final system optimization, including frequency response (on/off-axis), directivity, impedance, and distortion.
Measurement data can be provided on request.

8. Surfaces & Finish Philosophy

The N°3 is the most mechanically and acoustically uncompromising system of the N-Series.
Material selection and surface finishes serve one purpose only: maximum structural calm, long-term stability, and unaltered acoustic working conditions.

The enclosure is based on a heavily dimensioned beech plywood (multiplex) structure, designed for mass, stiffness, and reproducible resonance behavior.
With the N°3, appearance is always secondary — surface follows structure.

Hardwax Oil (standard)
  • Clear hardwax oil, open-pored and materially honest

  • Emphasizes volume, edges, and natural wood structure

  • Acoustically completely uncritical

  • Long-term stable, repairable, without sealing layers

This is the preferred and recommended finish for the N°3, as it makes the system’s monolithic character clearly visible.

Clear Lacquer (optional)
  • Satin clear lacquer with minimal gloss level

  • Increased mechanical protection with a technically calm layer structure

  • Suitable for heavily used environments or clearly defined design requirements

The clear lacquer serves surface protection only — not visual staging.

Stain & Color Options (project-based)

In principle, the N°3 follows a reduced, material-focused aesthetic.
On explicit request, however, bold and expressive colors are also possible — as a conscious design decision, not as an effect.

  • Transparent or opaque color finishes in strong, saturated tones

  • Technically calm execution, matte or satin

  • Color selection always coordinated on a project basis with room, lighting, and overall architecture

Even with intense colors, the execution of the N°3 remains strictly functional:
no high-gloss effects, no decorative embellishments — only clear surfaces, clean edges, and a mechanically calm structure.

RAL Lacquer (on request)

A full lacquer finish in nearly all RAL colors is possible, provided it suits the architectural and functional integration of the system.

  • Matte or satin execution

  • Multi-layer, mechanically stable lacquer build

  • No effect-driven or high-gloss surfaces

For the N°3, RAL lacquer is a deliberate option, not the default.

Material & Construction Logic of the N°3
  • Beech plywood in high wall thickness as the structural base

  • Surfaces as protection and material emphasis — not decoration

  • Maximum reduction to function, mass, and mechanical calm

The N°3 is not a design object.
It is an acoustic tool with physical presence.

“Distortion remains just as low at 95 dB as it does at 85 dB — the dynamic limits lie elsewhere.”
HiFi-Test, 02/22
