N°1

High-Efficiency Horn System

A loudspeaker whose form emerges from acoustic logic —
organically shaped, solidly built, precisely engineered.

The N°1 marks the beginning of the N-Series:
a monolithic two-way horn loudspeaker system with high efficiency, controlled directivity, and exceptional mechanical stability —
designed and manufactured in the LMH workshop.

Limited to seven pairs per year —
because development, manufacturing, and final tuning require time.

LMH N°1 – Seitenansicht, monolithische Gehäusestruktur

The N°1 is conceived as a monolithic acoustic unit:
all acoustically relevant components are not added as separate elements, but designed as an integrated system.

At its core is a precisely CNC-machined wooden horn, providing controlled directivity in the high-frequency range and stable spatial imaging.
The bass section is tuned for seamless integration with the horn, ensuring homogeneous dynamics and accurate transient response.

Development, manufacturing, and final tuning are carried out entirely in our own workshop — with a clear focus on long-term reliability, mechanical stability, and reproducible quality.

Thanks to its high efficiency and controlled radiation pattern, the N°1 integrates easily into domestic listening rooms and can be driven confidently even with moderate amplifier power.

One Design. Two Scales.

N°1 · Little One

  • More compact interpretation of the N°1 concept

  • 8″ woofer for fast, controlled low-frequency reproduction

  • Designed for smaller rooms and medium listening distances

  • Excellent dynamics and tonal balance with reduced footprint

N°1 · Big One

  • Same monolithic form factor

  • 12″ woofer for greater headroom and extended bass response

  • Ideal for larger rooms and higher sound pressure levels

  • Stable imaging and confident dynamics

Both versions follow the same acoustic concept.
The difference lies not in ambition, but in physical scaling.

Manufacturing & Materials

Wood is deliberately chosen as a structural material due to its high internal damping, which helps reduce self-resonances.
In the horn section, this enables mechanically stable waveguidance without the typical resonance artifacts associated with stiff, poorly damped materials.

  • Wooden horn: precisely CNC-machined, acoustically optimized

  • Enclosure: mechanically stable, robust structure

  • Components: high-quality drivers, carefully selected

  • Options: passive crossover or active bi-amped configuration

Finishes and wood species are selected on a project-specific basis.

Surfaces & Finish Philosophy...

The N°1 combines technical clarity with a deliberately reduced use of materials.
Surface treatment and finish are part of the functional design — not decorative effects.
Material integrity, structural stability, and acoustic neutrality take priority.

The basic structure of the N°1 is made from high-quality solid wood, preferably beech.
Beech offers a well-balanced combination of mechanical stiffness, internal damping, and long-term dimensional stability — ideal for the acoustic requirements of the N-Series.

Hardwax Oil (standard)
  • Clear hardwax oil — open-pored, natural, technically uncritical

  • Emphasizes the natural wood grain, no sealing surface layer

  • Acoustically neutral, durable, and easy to maintain

This finish is the standard configuration of the N°1 and underlines the system’s honestly engineered character.

Stain (optional)
  • Transparent stains to enhance grain structure and tonal depth

  • Wood structure remains fully visible

  • Color tones are defined on a project basis

  • Technically calm, without acoustic influence

Staining serves controlled color nuance — not visual exaggeration.

Lacquer (on request)
  • Opaque or satin lacquer finishes possible if explicitly requested

  • Technically restrained execution, without decorative effects

  • Color selection project-based, e.g. in nearly all RAL colors

Lacquer finishes are available only on explicit request and are not a standard option.

Material & construction logic of the N°1
  • Solid wood (primarily beech): stable base with authentic resonance behavior

  • Hardwax oil: standard finish, open, acoustically neutral

  • Stains: visual nuance with visible wood structure

  • Lacquer: project-specific option

Surfaces on the N°1 serve technical clarity and functional calm — not visual effect.

Technical Concept & Design Rationale

This section is intended for readers who wish to understand the acoustic concept of the N°1 in greater detail.

1. System Overview

The N°1 is a monolithically engineered two-way horn loudspeaker system, combining a high-frequency horn with a direct-radiating low-frequency driver.
Construction, material selection, and geometry follow a clearly defined objective: controlled directivity, high efficiency, and mechanical stability — without decorative or industrial compromises.

Design Principle: 2-way horn / direct radiator
Crossover Region: approx. 900–1,200 Hz (model- and alignment-dependent)
Sensitivity: >95 dB / 1 W / 1 m (system-dependent)
Operation: passive or active (bi-amped)

Solid Wood Enclosure & Mechanical Stability

The enclosure of the N°1 is manufactured from solid wood or a solid wood composite — without veneers, decorative laminates, or synthetic surface layers.

Wood is not employed for nostalgic reasons, but due to its physical properties:

• high internal damping
• precisely controllable wall thickness
• mechanical stability at high sound pressure levels

Each enclosure is an individual piece, featuring visible grain patterns, subtle variations, and a deliberate craftsmanship character — this is intentional.

Every N°1 is produced as a unique piece in our manufactory.

2. High-Frequency System & Horn Geometry

The high-frequency system is based on a 1″ compression driver directly coupled to a CNC-machined solid wood horn.
The horn is not an add-on component, but an integral part of the acoustic structure.

Why solid wood:

  • defined, reproducible geometry

  • high internal damping combined with sufficient mass

  • no thin-walled plastic or molded parts

  • no coatings, foils, or imitations

The result is an efficient, impulse-stable high-frequency system with controlled directivity and a clean transition into the midrange.

3. Low-Frequency System & Versions

The N°1 is built in two consequently scaled variants — the same acoustic concept with different physical reserves.

Little One

• 8″ low-frequency driver
• fast, precise bass reproduction
• ideally suited for smaller rooms and moderate listening distances

Big One

• 12″ low-frequency driver
• increased displacement and extended low-frequency authority
• higher headroom for larger rooms and elevated playback levels

Both variants follow the same constructional logic.
This is not a reduced version, but a true physical scaling of the system architecture.

4. Crossover Region & Directivity

The transition between the low-frequency section and the horn is set at approximately 900–1,200 Hz.
This range is chosen so that directivity and phase behavior between both systems remain as uniform as possible.

The objective:

  • uniform radiation through the crossover region

  • stable spatial imaging

  • reduced dependence on room reflections

The tuning follows acoustic criteria — not visual considerations or marketing-driven decisions.

5. Passive or Active Operation

The N°1 can be operated either in a classic passive configuration or in an active bi-amped setup.

Passive

  • single power amplifier

  • clearly defined, fixed crossover network

  • maximum simplicity

Active (bi-amp + DSP)

  • separate amplification of high-frequency and low-frequency sections

  • precise adjustment of level, crossover point, and time alignment

  • particularly suitable for demanding rooms or individual fine-tuning

Both operating modes are fully integrated into the design — not an afterthought or retrofit solution.

6. Measurements & Voicing

Measurements for the N°1 serve technical verification, not self-promotion.

Depending on the project, this may include:

  • frequency response (on-axis / off-axis)

  • impedance behavior

  • distortion characteristics

  • crossover behavior and directivity

Measurement data can be provided on a project-specific basis.
Final tuning is always carried out with the entire system and the listening room in mind.
